Mel Coleman (b. 1988) is a multidisciplinary Toronto/Tkaronto-based artist, working within painting, drawing, and mixed media. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with a Major in Studio Art and a Minor in Art History from the University of Guelph (2011). Her work explores the interconnections of human nature, investigating themes of the body, gender, memory, and trauma through lenses of beauty, transformation, and materiality.
Coleman's work has been featured nationally and internationally, including showcases in Toronto, Guelph, Oakville, Kitchener, Illinois, USA and Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Some notable galleries that have featured her work in group shows include Propeller Gallery, p/m Gallery, Red Head Gallery, Gallery 1313, The Ryerson Space at The Gladstone Hotel, in Toronto, ON, the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre Gallery in Oakville, ON, and Artery Gallery, Kitchener, ON. Most recently, her work was included in an exhibition curated by Lyla Rye, at Artscape Youngplace 2024.
She has been an artist in residence at Spark Box Studios in 2014, published in Art Katalyst Magazine in 2014 and was the recipient of the the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation Printmaking Prize in 2011.
Coleman's portfolio also includes significant independent mural projects, including The Christie Pits Mural with The David Suzuki Foundation and Blue Dot Org, Toronto ON (2018) and an extensive 11 mural project at Merge Spaces in Scarborough, ON (2022).
