STATEMENT:
Mel Coleman's multidisciplinary practice explores the body, trauma, memory, and healing. Using unconventional methods that blend painting, drawing, and printing, she often employs her own body as both subject and tool, creating intimate impressions through vulnerability and transformation. Inspired by Kintsugi, her work embraces the beauty of breakage and repair, treating fractures as integral to the human experience.
Central to her practice is the impact of limiting belief systems on healing. Coleman investigates how these patterns, often shaped by past trauma, restrict neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and heal. Her work fosters a dialogue between body, memory, and self, emphasizing an integration of scars rather than erasure.
